The differences between Qi, Qi2, MagSafe and Qi2.2.
What started as a cable-free convenience is now a fast, smart, and seamless experience. It began with Qi: simple, universal, but slow and easy to misalign. Qi Magnetic improved the experience with magnets, mainly for iPhone users. Then Apple introduced MagSafe: faster, certified, and magnetic. Qi2 followed, combining MagSafe-like magnets with an open, universal standard for all brands. Now Qi2.2 is on the horizon, pushing wireless charging into high-speed territory up to 50W. Check the table below for more similarities and differences between the charging standards.
Which phones do support Qi2?
Qi2 supports all Qi2-compatible phones, including the iPhone 12 and newer. The first Qi2-ready Android phone, the Samsung Galaxy S25, launched in 2025, with more devices to follow. Additional Qi2-enabled products, such as earphones and smartwatches, are expected soon.
In addition, you can also use a Qi2 wireless charger with a phone with ”Qi” support and, for example, purchase a Qi2 phone case for magnetic (horizontal and vertical) charging. Do you have an iPhone (12 and up) with MagSafe? You can simply use Qi2 wireless chargers, which are often cheaper than wireless MagSafe chargers. Check here the full list of phones that support Qi, MagSafe or Qi2 wireless charging.
Is Qi2 better than MagSafe?
Qi2 is the latest charging technology, which is comparable to Apple’s MagSafe in speed and operation with magnetic rings. Qi2 will be the standard charging technology of the future, as it is available for all brands (including Apple, Samsung, Google, etc.). This makes Qi2 more user-friendly than MagSafe.
