Apple devices already have built-in magnets
Recent iPhones already have a magnetic ring built into the device itself. This allows magnetic wireless chargers to align perfectly and charge directly without needing a magnetic phone case. Not sure if your phone supports wireless charging? Our guide to phones that support wireless charging helps you quickly check compatibility.
Samsung and other Android devices require a magnetic case
With Samsung and other devices, the magnet is not built into the smartphone itself as standard. You will therefore need a magnetic case, such as a MagSafe-compatible case. The magnetic ring in the case ensures that your smartphone can connect magnetically to the charger. Without such a magnetic case, that magnetic connection won’t work and you won’t be able to charge your phone wirelessly.
What can I do when my phone case affects wireless charging?
Most phone cases work without any issues with wireless charging. Thin cases made of silicone, plastic or leather are usually fully compatible with wireless chargers for Apple devices. Wireless charging works via magnetic energy between the charger and your smartphone. That’s why a good connection between the two is important. If a case is too thick or contains metal parts, that connection can be disrupted. Thick protective cases or cases with metal parts in particular can cause your phone to charge more slowly or not at all.
Common causes of wireless charging issues include:
- Metal components in your phone case.
- A case thicker than 3 mm.
- Bulky attachments, such as wallets, card holders or other accessories attached to the back of the case.
How to fix it:
- Place your phone on a flat wireless charger without the case. If your phone charges normally, your case is likely causing the issue.
- Choose a silicone or plastic case that is less than 3 mm thick.
- For the best magnetic connection, use a MagSafe-compatible case or a case with a built-in magnetic ring.
In most cases, wireless charging works perfectly well with a phone case. If you experience charging issues, checking your case for the common causes above can help you quickly identify and solve the problem.
