What to know before bringing a power bank on a plane
Why this question comes up so often
Anyone who travels by air knows there are clear rules about what you can and cannot bring on board. Liquids are restricted, sharp objects are prohibited and batteries fall under specific safety regulations. It is especially this last category that often causes confusion.
A power bank is essentially a loose lithium battery and therefore falls under international aviation regulations, as established by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
Can you bring a power bank on a plane?
Yes, you can bring a power bank on board. However, there is one important condition: it must be carried in your hand luggage. Power banks are not allowed in hold luggage.
This is set out in the international guidelines for the transport of lithium-ion batteries and is confirmed by airlines such as KLM and British Airways.
The reason is safety. If a battery becomes damaged or overheats, the cabin crew can respond immediately. This would not be possible in the aircraft hold. For that reason, loose batteries must always remain in the cabin, as described in the guidance provided by IATA.
What about capacity?
Airlines assess power banks based on watt-hours (Wh).
According to the guidelines of IATA, lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh are permitted in cabin baggage without prior approval from the airline.
For most travellers, this is more than sufficient. Nearly all power banks designed for smartphones fall within this limit. Larger models, for example those intended for laptops, may be subject to additional rules. If you are unsure, always check the guidelines of your airline before travelling.
Travelling with the Zens Powerbank Pro 1
The Zens Powerbank Pro 1 is available in two versions: 5,000 mAh and 10,000 mAh. Both models remain well within the permitted 100 Wh limit for cabin baggage and can be taken on board without special approval, as long as they are carried in the cabin.
The power bank is available in white and black. Both versions are made from lightweight aluminium and feature a slim design that is easy to carry. The 5,000 mAh model fits comfortably in your pocket, while the 10,000 mAh version is compact enough for any bag.
The 5,000 mAh version is ideal for short trips or a day of travel. The 10,000 mAh version provides extra reassurance during longer travel days or layovers.
A new generation: Semi-Solid-State Powerbank
In addition to the current range, the Zens Semi-Solid-State Powerbank introduces a new battery technology.
This model uses semi-solid-state battery technology. By storing more energy in less space, it achieves a remarkably slim design:
- 8 mm thin (5,000 mAh)
- 11 mm thin (10,000 mAh)
Despite its compact size, it delivers strong performance. With Qi2.2 wireless charging and up to 25W output, it is ideal for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 17. iPhone 12 to 15 are supported up to 15W.
You can charge two devices at the same time: one wirelessly and one via cable. Power pass-through allows you to charge your phone and the power bank simultaneously using a single socket.
Semi-solid-state technology enhances thermal stability and durability, offering consistent performance across varying temperatures and daily use.
Both capacities are designed to be slim, easy to carry and reliable for everyday use and travel.
For Apple and Samsung
-
Both the Zens Powerbank Pro 1 and the Zens Semi-Solid-State Powerbank support wireless charging via Qi2 technology and are suitable for both Apple and Samsung devices.
-
The Powerbank Pro 1 offers Qi2 wireless fast charging and is ideal for everyday use on the go.
-
The Semi-Solid-State Powerbank supports Qi2.2 and delivers up to 25W of wireless power for iPhone 16 and iPhone 17. iPhone 12 to 15 charge up to 15W.
- If you use your power bank intensively or travel frequently with changing temperatures, the Semi-Solid-State Powerbank is designed for that type of use. If you mainly use a power bank occasionally or for everyday trips, the Powerbank Pro 1 is a practical and reliable choice.
-
For optimal magnetic fast charging performance, proper magnetic alignment is required.
-
iPhone 12 and newer models have built-in magnets, so a case is not essential. A MagSafe case can provide additional convenience.
-
If you use an Android device, such as a Samsung smartphone, a magnetic case or magnetic ring ensures proper alignment and stable charging.
Universal and practical when travelling
Zens power banks are designed for convenience. Thanks to USB-C, they are universally compatible with most modern devices.
With power pass-through, you can charge your power bank and your smartphone at the same time. This means you only need one socket to power both devices.
Ideal at airports, on trains or in cafés where there are few available sockets.
Can you use your power bank during the flight?
Yes, in most cases you may use your power bank on the plane to charge your phone or other small devices, provided it remains in your hand luggage and you follow the instructions of the cabin crew. Specific rules may vary by airline.
Well prepared for your journey
A power bank is simply useful when travelling. You use your phone for your boarding pass, to look something up or to arrange transport upon arrival. It is reassuring not to constantly check your battery percentage. With extra power in your bag, you can travel with greater peace of mind.
